Abstract

775,915. Folding sheets. JESUS, H. L. L. Feb. 3, 1955 [Feb. 4, 1954], No. 3177/55. Class 42 (2). [Also in Group XXX] A 'sheet folding machine comprises a feed conveyer A, Fig. 1, a multiple tape delivery conveyer B, and a multiple tape auxiliary conveyer C, the tapes of which are interleaved in those of conveyer B and which moves in the opposite direction thereto. One of conveyers B, C (as shown, conveyer C) is movable from the Fig. 1 position to the Fig. 4 position so that a sheet X coming from conveyer A can be displaced first in one direction and then in the other so as to form a fold at Z, Fig. 4, the movement of conveyer C being controlled automatically by detector means D sensitive to the passage of sheet X. In the Fig. 1 arrangement, detector D comprises a feeler 13 which when moved by the leading edge of sheet X closes a contact 14 to energize a solenoid 12 which moves conveyer C to the Fig. 1 position. When the trailing edge of sheet X passes feeler 13 the solenoid is deenergized and conveyer C moves to the Fig. 4 position. The position of detector D along conveyer A can be varied to vary the position of the fold along the sheet. In another arrangement a series of detectors Da1 to Da4, Fig. 8, arranged along conveyer A are connected as shown to a series of detectors Db1 to Db4 arranged along conveyer B or C, the fold being formed on the line Z, whatever the length of the sheet. In another arrangement, Fig. 9, a detector 23 is mounted on an arm 25 pivoted at 26 and engaging a cam 27. When detector 23 is moved by the leading edge of the sheet it deenergizes solenoid 12 and also a clutch-controlling solenoid 28. The latter actuates a singlerevolution clutch 29 which causes cam 27 to rotate one revolution. Over arc 27a, arm 25 remains stationary, while over arc 27b arm 25 is moved rearwardly towards the dotted line position so as to traverse the sheet; solenoid 12 is de-energized, and folding takes place, when detector 23 clears the trailing edge of the sheet. By appropriate selection of the position of the detector on conveyer A, and of the relation between the speed of conveyer A and the speed of traverse of arm 25, folding is effected at the same fraction of the length of each sheet.
