[Also in Group XXIV] A washing machine having a washing and spin-drying drum o which is driven by one motor a during the washing operation and by a second motor b during the spin-drying operation, the shaft b<SP>1</SP> of the motor b being in permanent driving connection with the drum o, while the motor a can be connected to and disconnected from the drum by means of a friction clutch (see Group XXIV) of which one member is formed by an axially displaceable idler d rotatable on the shaft b<SP>1</SP> in driving connection with the motor a, is characterized in that the idler d is displaceable axially by one or more flexible pipes (Fig. 2, not shown), capable of being expanded by internal liquid pressure for the purpose of establishing or interrupting the clutch connection with a member c<SP>1</SP> keyed upon the shaft b<SP>1</SP> and forming the other member of the friction clutch. The member c<SP>1</SP> comprises a flange on a pulley c. The idler d comprises a pulley and the opposed faces of the pulley d and flange c<SP>1</SP> are provided with coupling surfaces to form the clutch. For washing purposes the motor a only is switched on and drives the drum o by means of the pulley a<SP>1</SP>, d, c and p, belts m, n, and the friction clutch. For spin-drying purposes the motor a is switched off and the motor b switched on, the clutch being disengaged. In a modification the clutch is engaged under spring pressure and disengaged by hydraulic pressure. Chain wheels and chains may be employed instead of pulleys and bolts.
