Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A change-speed arrangement for a rotary drum washing machine comprises a motor driving (via two coaxial V-pulleys 2, 3 and belts 4, 5) V-pulleys 6, 7 which are mounted freely rotatably one on each side of a pulley 12 on a hollow shaft 23, and which can move axially relative to the shaft so that one only is engaged with pulley 12 which is also freely rotatable but is fixed against axial motion and drives the rotary drum by a belt 13 and a pulley. The flanges of pulleys 7, 12 have clutch linings 31, 30, and a plate 18 loosely mounted on shaft 23 has a clutch lining 34 facing pulley 7. The pulleys 6, 7 are interconnected by pins 29, 32 which engage the pulleys, respectively and pass through slots 42 in the hollow shaft 23 and are mounted in a rod 24 which is mounted for axial motion within the shaft 23. The drive is usually held in its low speed (washing) position with pulley 6 driving pulley 12 by means of a spring 40. To change to high speed (spin-drying) a lever 39 is depressed which moves plate 18 so that its clutch lining 34 engages pulley 7. The plate 18 is thus caused to rotate and bring into operation centrifugal devices comprising weights 36 which are thrown outwards causing the devices to pivot about 44 and bring pads 35 into contact with the flange of pulley 7. The drive to plate 18 is now via the pads 35 instead of the clutch lining 34 and the plate 18 is pushed back to its original position. As the centrifugal devices move further they push pulley 7 to the left thus causing the pulley 6 also to move to the left. Thus pulley 6 is disengaged from pulley 12 and pulley 7 is engaged with pulley 12. When the machine is stopped the original position is attained by all the parts. The belt tensions may be adjusted by relative motion between the motor shaft and the shaft 23 and also by the pulley 3 which has a spring-loaded flange 8.
