Abstract

1517792 Belt gearing; clutch control ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd 31 March 1976 [1 April 1975] 13250/75 Headings F2Q and F2L A belt transmission mechanism includes an endless toothed belt 15 in permanent mesh with driven toothed wheels 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, mounted on a movable support plate 13, and is provided with means for bringing the belt 15 into engagement with a continuously rotating driving toothed wheel 11 on a shaft 10 of fixed axis, wherein the shaft 10 also carries a driving plain wheel 12 and one of the toothed driven wheels is provided with a friction wheel 25 coaxially secured to it in alignment with the plain wheel 12, such that a movement of the support plate 13 about a pivot 14 towards shaft 10 initially causes the friction wheel 25 to engage the surface of the plain wheel 12, thereby running the belt up to speed before the belt teeth engage the toothed driving wheel 11, with means also provided for disengaging the friction wheel from the plain wheel subsequently. In the embodiment shown, wheels 16 and 25 are carried by a pivoted arm 21, biased by a spring 23, and the end of arm 21 strikes a cam surface 26 to pivot wheel 25 out of engagement with the plain wheel 12. Wheel 17 is also carried by an arm 22 which is biased by a spring 24 and acts as a belt tensioning member. Means may also be provided for causing the support to dwell for a period at the stage of frictional engagement, or for causing the support to spring back to a disengaged position if the manual engagement mechanism has not become latched fully home. The assembly may be incorporated in textile processing machines.
