Abstract
774,881. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. April 7, 1955 [April 8, 1954], No, 10337/55. Divided out of 774,875. Class 100(1) In apparatus for separating and forwarding-sheets from the top of a pile of the kind in which the separated sheets are fed by forwarding means to a take-off roller 34 close to the pile and in which there are pile-raising means comprising primary and secondary raising means, the latter being adapted to take a paritally exhausted pile 15a from the primary means and including, at the front of the pile, pilecarrying pawls 25, the pawls are supported by an upwardly movable transverse bar 20 whereby they may pass between the take-off roller 34 and the pile 15a as the pawls approach the upper limit of their movement, and the secondary means can be elevated to the extent required for the separation and forwarding of the last sheets of the pile. Pile raising means shown is a modification of that described in Specification 711,272, and the conveyer means 68 is as described in Specification 774,875. The primary pile raising means comprises cables 10, side bars 11 and cross-bars 12 by which a pile-board 13 carrying a transfer board 31 and pile 15 may be supported and raised. The secondary raising means comprises a cross-bar 16 attached to cables 17, the cross-bar 20 attached to cables 21, and the pawls 25. The bar 20, which is in front of four vertical guides 22 for the front of the pile, has forked ends embracing guide bars 23, and has a rod 27 secured thereto. Three pawls 25 loosely pivoted on the rod 27 are shaped to fit around the bar 20 and project upwardly. The top 29 of each pawl is flat to engage beneath a transfer board 31. and each pawl is urged towards the pile by a spring. The take-off roller 34 is secured to a driven shaft 33 and comprises spaced sections between which the pawls 25 can pass upwardly with 'the depleted pile. The guide bars 23 for the ends of the bar 20 are each constructed in two parts; there is a fixed upper part to which is pivoted a lower part, and the latter is connected by a link 39 to an arm 40 secured to a cross-shaft 42 which can be rotated through 180 degrees to swing the bar 20 and pawls 25 away from the pile to allow free passage of the pile by the primary elevating means. Sheets separated from the pile at the rear are forwarded to the roller 34 but to introduce the front edges of the sheets between presser wheels 35 and the roller 34 there are four reciprocating suction grippers 45 (not shown), which are as described in Specication 774,875. The gap between the roller 34 and, conveyer roller 67 is bridged by a narrow telescopic feed-board or guide 90 also as described in Specification 774,875. Specification 427,041 also is referred to.
