774,880. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. March 24, 1955 [March 24, 1954; Jan. 17, 1955],'Nos. 8652/55 and 1410/55. Divided out of 774,874. Class 100(1) In sheet-separating and forwarding apparatus in which sheets are separated one by one from the top of a pile and forwarded by means gripping the rear edge of each sheet and moving it over the top of the pile to conveyer means, the latter runs at a substantially constant speed and conveys the sheets at a substantially greater speed than the forwarding means. The forwarding means may also separate, or assist in separating, sheets from the pile. As shown, the forwarding means comprises two' suction grippers 2 carried by arms 3 secured to a cam shaft 4 having both oscillatory and axial movements. The grippers 2 take each top sheet 5 from known sheet separating means comprising two suction grippers and an air-blast nozzle, and swing forward over the pile to the position shown in chain-lines to present the forward edge to a tape conveyer 20 which conveys the sheets in overlapping relationship to a layboard. The conveyer speed may be twice that of the grippers 2, so that during the forwarding movement by the grippers the front portion of each sheet is pulled forward by friction from the tail 21 of the preceding sheet, the operation being assisted by an air blast. The shaft 4 is reciprocated axially, to impart a sideways movement to each sheet forwarded, by means described in Specification 774,879. Specifications 427,041, 741,226 and 774,875 are referred to.
