Abstract

659,193. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Feb. 21, 1949, No. 4730. [Class 100 (i)] In sheet-feeding apparatus of the kind in which a succession of sheets are fed by conveyer tapes 2 to a layboard 8 on which each sheet is registered, the sheets being held in frictional engagement with the tapes by presser-rolls 10 rotated by the moving sheets, suction means, such as a suction roll 22, is provided for gripping the rear edge portion of each sheet 6 and for advancing the sheet towards front lays 36. Each roll 10 is carried by an adjustable spring- pressed arm 12 which is extended at 18 to serve as a sheet smoother. The suction roll 22 is carried by an arm 20 pivoted to the arm 12, and is adjustable towards the sheets 6 by screw means 24. The roll 22 comprises a fixed core and a rotatable shell with axial slots 30 therein which move into registration with a suction orifice 32 in the core as the shell rotates. The shell is driven by a belt 34 from the associated presser-roll 10 at any suitable peripheral speed. The presser-rolls 10 are arranged more than a sheet length away from the front lays 36, and the sheets are fed in an underlapping stream along the feed-board 4. When a sheet leaves the roll 10, it is advanced to the front lays 36 by the suction-roll 22, whereupon the suction may be cut off. In a modification, the suctionroll is driven by a gear-train from the presserroll, and the suction supply to the suction-roll is adjustable by a needle valve.
