774,554. Purifying liquids. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 9, 1955 [Nov. 19, 1954], No. 33506/54. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] One stage of a multi-stage mixer-settler apparatus for liquid-liquid extraction comprises a mixer compartment 10, Fig. 1, and a settler compartment 11 separated by a wall 26. Lighter liquid enters the mixer compartment at 14 and heavier liquid at 15. The liquids are mixed within the lift tube 12 of an air lift-pump in the compartment by air rising from the air tube 13, Fig. 2, and are also mixed in that portion 16 of the mixing compartment lying below a partition 27 by air escaping to the outside around the foot of the tube 12. The mixed liquids are raised by the pump above the partition 27 and pass through a port 17 into the settler compartment 11 where an interface 22 forms. The lighter liquid passes out at 14a to the next mixer compartment 10a on the right whilst the heavier liquid passes under a partition 23 and out at 15b to the next mixer compartment 10b on the left. The tube 13 is held by a grub screw 30, Fig. 2, in a collar 29 resting on a screw adjuster 31 in a cover plate 32 for the apparatus. The depth of penetration of the tube 13 in the tube 12 and the air flow to the pump are both adjusted to ensure the mixing (both inside and outside the tube 12) referred to above.
