947,509. Sampling liquids. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 13, 1962 [July 25, 1961], No. 26868/61. Heading B8N. An apparatus for taking proportional samples from a main stream flow in a channel, such as that leading from a cooling pond for temporary storage of the irradiated fuel elements, comprises a first flow divider 2 disposed across the channel and at least one further divider 5, the flow dividers each comprising a line of discrete weirs 47 and being arranged in series so that the weirs of the further flow divider or dividers collect behind them the flow over a selected weir in the preceding divider, there being a continual fall in level from the first flow divider to the final divider and means 9 for collecting the flow over a selected weir 8 in the divider 5. As shown, the flow from a settling zone 1 leading from the cooling pond, is divided by the divider 2 forming four weirs, the flow over one weir 4 being divided into 100 parts via slits 6 defining weirs 7 formed in the divider plate 5. The flow through one weir 8 is fed into a collector 9 where it is again divided into 10 parts by a series of slits or weirs 10 formed in the collector, the flow from a weir 11 being fed into a collector 12 and thence into a tank 14. Baffle plates 21, 22 are provided in order to streamline the flow through the weirs. A spot sample may be withdrawn from the tank via a pipe 18 after the contents of the tank have been thoroughly mixed by compressed air fed into the tank via pipe 17. The tank may be emptied via a pipe 19. U.S.A. Specification 2,800,797 is referred to.
