Abstract
1,269,034. Irradiation apparatus. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 28 Jan., 1970 [6 Feb., 1969], No. 4090/70. Heading H5R. [Also in Division C3] A cell, in which a liquid product is irradiated by an accelerated electron beam as it is circulated continuously therethrough, comprises an elongate tank 1 having an inlet duct 5 containing an arrangement for dividing the flow of liquid in the tank into a number of parallel streams, and a discharge duct 6 including an overflow orifice 19 and a discharge spout 20 with a valve (not shown) for regulating the depth of the liquid within the tank. As shown, a series of small plates 10 rigidly fixed to the internal wall of inlet duct 5 divide the liquid flow into unitary steams and the length of the tank is made so as to establish a stable laminar flow regime in the centre of the tank, and the electron distribution in the irradiating beam is made to correspond to the flow velocity diagram of the liquid to give a homogeneous total dose. To provide laminar flow in the region of the tank below A1 or Ti window 11, through which the electrons from accelerator 2 pass, extension elements may be coupled between the flanges 3, 9. A cooling jacket 14 may surround the region of the tank in which irradiation occurs. A cell for the radio vulcanization of natural and synthetic latexes is particularly described, with dimensions and other operational details being given. Ancillary apparatus comprising, for example, a liquid level detector, temperature control devices and an electron beam detector may also be provided.
