735,422. Making extracts. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 7, 1952 [April 13,1951], No. 8490/51. Class 81(1). In a liquid-liquid countercurrent extraction ap paratus comprising a cylindrical vessel and a cylindrical rotor mounted coaxially within said vessel such that pairs of contrarotating vortices are set up in a liquid contained between the rotor and the vessel on rotation of the rotor, a pair of annular radial fins are provided, per vortex pair, on the rotor for controlling the vertical dimensions of the vortices. The invention is particularly applicable when the distance between the cylinder and rotor is less than half the radius of the rotor. An apparatus for extracting a solute from an aqueous solution by means of an organic solvent may comprise a stainless steel cylindrical rotor 1 carrying annular fins 5 and contained in a cylindrical glass vessel 6, the bottom of which is rounded and " blanked-off " by a loose fitting lead filled polythene plug 8. The aqueous feed is taken in through a polythene tube 11 to a point just below a baffle 10 and is removed from below the plug 8 at the lowest point of the vessel 6 through an outlet 7. The solvent feed is taken from a connection 12 on a manifold 13 to four spaced inlets 14 level with the bottom of the rotor 1 and the solvent is removed by suction through a polythene tube 15 from the highest part of the vessel 6.
