The spigot 10, Fig. 2, of: a hose coupling includes a shoulder 12 with adjoining-inclined surfaces 14, 16, the former of which terminates in a reduced, portion 18 at the outer end of the spigot, whilst the socket is provided with a sleeve 20 with a seal 22 retained therein by the threaded end of a hose end fitting 26, the sleeve 20 having diametrically opposed inclined slots 28 in which are slidably located jaws 30 as shown in Fig. 6; the. bevelled edge 34 of each jaw is engaged by a washer 36, Fig. 2, that is loaded by a spring 38 the other end of which abuts. the shoulder 40 on the sleeve 20. Another washer 42 surrounds the sleeve and has bends 44, Fig. 7, therein which act as cams on the inner edges 33, Fig. 6, of the jaws. 30; this washer may be moved axially of the sleeve by means of an outer cover through a shoulder 48 to engage the washer. The socket is normally sealed by a spring-loaded disc 54. Operation. (a) Coupling. The insertion of the spigot 10 into the socket forces the disc 54 away from the seal 22 and causes the surface 14 to force the jaws 30 outwardly, and hence the washer 36 rightwardly, thereby causing compression of the 'spring 38, until the shoulder 12 passes the jaws 30 whereupon the spring. urges the jaws inwardly into the locking position shown where they lie, along the surface 16. (b) Uncoupling. The outer coyer is moved to the right so that the bends 44 engage the edges 33 and move the jaws 30 outwardly until the shoulder 12 can pass therebetween whereupon the spigot 10 can be removed from the socket.
