Abstract

774,217. Seat upholstery. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Aug. 18, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1954], No. 29435/54. Class 52 (4). A cushion supporting structure for the bottoms or back rests of seats comprises a substantially rigid pan 51, shaped to correspond approximately to that part of the body which the pan is indirectly to support, and attached by resilient means 52 to a rigid frame 54. In the preferred form, the pan 51 is bordered by sheet rubber 52 which is itself attached to and bordered by rigid sheet material 53 which receives the screws fixing the cushion support to the frame. The pan may be of sheet metal or moulded or built up from a reinforced synthetic resin composition. A forward extension 34 of the pan (Fig. 4) may be provided for attachment to the front of the rigid frame in which case the pan may be supported on its free sides by resilient strips 33 or by coiled springs. The extension is of sufficient elasticity to permit some hinging of the pan about the frame front. Alternatively the pan may be supported from the surrounding frame entirely by means of resilient strips. Stops in the form of non-resilient strips of material may be underslung across the frame to limit the movement of the pan.
