Abstract

774,180. Washing granular material. BURCH, C. R. Nov. 18, 1954 [Nov. 18, 1953], No. 32028/53. Class 82(2) A separator for grading and/or sorting particles in liquid suspension comprises a duct in the form of an oblique helicoid having its axis substantially horizontal and arranged to oscillated in a circular orbit transverse to its axis. As shown, a duct comprising an oblique helicoid having turns 2-8 is mounted on flexible supports 19 and is attached at the top and bottom of its inner periphery to a tube 11 which carries bearings in which a shaft 12 carrying weights 13 may rotate. A shaft 14<SP>1</SP> is connected by universal joints 15 to the shaft 12 at one end and to a pulley 16 at the other. The weights 13, on rotation of the shaft 12, produce oscillations in the shaft which are transmitetd to the duct. The bottom end of the duct may be formed into a series of channels 9 for the removal of the separated products and a channel 10, fitted to the underside of the duct, removes any liquid which may have crept over the edge and run down the underside of the duct. Take-off spouts may be provided on the outer rim of the duct where desired, and fresh water supplied at the inner edge.
