774,130. Liquid-liquid extraction apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 16, 1955 [July 2, 1954], No. 19446/54. Class 81(1) [Also in Group XXVIII] A counterflow liquid-liquid contracting apparatus comprises a vessel 5 divided by partitions 4 into columns A, B and C having sieve plates or random packing (not shown) and a protective shield S for use with radio-active liquids from which impurities are to be separated. In operaton radio-active continuous phase liquid entering column C through an inlet 15 is transferred to column B, C in series by injectors 17c, 17b discharging through ducts 18c, 18b and which utilize said liquid as the working fluid on subjecting it to pneumatic pulsations effected by an air motor 24, 25 (see Group XXVIII). The reverse flow contacting liquids e.g., an organic solvent enters colum A through a duct 7a and distributing nozzles 8a and dispersed phase liquid is transferred from the head of column A to a conduit 13b leading to nozzles 8b at the base of column B by an injector 12a similar to injectors 17c, 17b except that the dispersed phase liquid is used as the pulsating working fluid. Disperse phase liquid is similarly transferred from column B to column C by an injector 12b. Cleaned continuous phase liquid leaves vessel 5 through an outlet 19 of column A and impurity-bearing disperse phase-liquid leaves through an outlet 14 of column C.
