Abstract
773,603. Carbonyl iron. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. June 15, 1955 [June 28, 1954], No. 18907/54. Class 72 . , Iron powder containing nitrogen is produced by decomposing iron carbonyl in the hot free space of a decomposer into the top of which the carbonyl vapour and ammonia with or without a diluent gas are added, the temperature in a zone at the bottom of the decomposer being maintained 50‹C. or more higher than the temperature in the decomposer above the bottom zone. As shown, a heating jacket 2 is divided by a partition 8 forming a lower zone which may be less than one half but more than one quarter of the height of the decomposer and steam may be admitted to both parts through valves 12, 13, and 15, the rate of admission through valve 15 being greater than, that through valves 12 and 13. The particle size is controlled by the temperature in the top part of the decomposer e.g. a temperature of 250-290 ‹C. at one quarter of the distance down giving particles 4.5 to 5 microns diameter and 270- 320‹C. giving particles 3 to 3.5 microns diameter, the bottom temperatures being 370-410‹C. and over 410‹C. respectively. The powder produced is stated to give high Q-valves at high frequencies.
