Class 59 [Also in Group VIII] A plant for simultaneously washing and defiberizing fibrous materials or for refining pulp which has already been defiberized, in which one or more hammer or other impact mills operate in a working chamber and in which the fibrous material or pulp is treated in the presence of large quantities of water or other. liquid is characterized in that the working chamber is provided with an abrasive lining and the working surfaces of thehammers or other impact members are made of abrasive material. The hammer mill shown comprises a hammer rotor 4 operating within a chamber provided with an abrasive lining 12, water and material to be treated being supplied through pipes 8, 10 respectively. The treated material passes through a sieve 5.
