Abstract

773,375. Moulding metal powder. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 9, 1955 [Sept. 10, 1954], No. 26263/54. Class 87(2). In making metal strip from metal powder the powder is converted into the fluidized state before being passed to compacting means. Fig. 1 shows a fluidizing chamber 1 having a perforated false bottom 2 below which is a space 5 into which compressed air or other gas is blown. Metal powder is fed from a hopper 8 onto the false bottom and is converted into the fluidized condition by the air passing through the holes in the false bottom. The powder falls over a lip 12 onto a carrier metal strip 14 and is pressed, with the strip, between rolls 16, 17. Means may be provided to confine the powder laterally on the strip. To compensate for the spreading effect of the rolls on the powder, the column of powder 13 issuing from lip 12 is deeper at the centre than at the edges ; for the same reason, in the modified outlet shown in Fig. 3, comprising holes in the end wall of chamber 1, the holes are closer together at the centre than at the ends. The strip made from the powder may be removed from the carrier strip or allowed to remain on the latter to form a composite strip which is further compacted. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the carrier strip is omitted, the powder being fed down a perforated shoot directly into the bight of the rolls.
