Powdery materials are applied to metal sheets 10 on a belt conveyer 11, preparatory to plating, by a thin conveyer band 8 passing round a driving roller 1 at one end and at the other end round an idler of very small radius or a rigid member 6 having a round edge, the conveying run of the band 8 being supported by a table 3. The material is fed to the band 8 by a hopper which has its bottom formed by the band, and the lower edge of its front wall 12 is spaced from the band to form a gap 4. The hopper is so fed by a shoot 13 as to keep the level of the material in the hopper constant. The shoot being displaceable longitudinally to enable fine adjustment of its position to be made. The lower limit of the gap 4 is determined by a sill 9 which extends upwards through a slot in the table 3 so as to raise the belt slightly and vary the width of the gap.
