Apparatus for joining pieces of laminar material in sheet or strip form, e.g. veneers or cardboard, comprises a perforated endless conveyer, a suction chamber beneath one side of the conveyer, a feed hopper for the laminar pieces above the said side of the conveyer, a second conveyer consisting of a pair or pairs of rollers or an endless belt adapted to receive the assembled laminar pieces from the first conveyer and to set up a sufficient resistance to movement of the pieces to maintain their contiguous edges in close contact, and means for securing the pieces together in the form of a continuous strip or sheet. As shown, Fig. 2, laminar pieces d are fed one by one from a hopper c transversely or diagonally on to a perforated conveyer a on which they are retained by suction through a chamber e. A second conveyer n, similar to a and having a suction chamber p, receives the pieces d and is driven slightly slower than a so as to maintain the pieces in close contact. A third conveyer q receives the pieces from conveyer n and applies adhesive paper strips m and to the surfaces of the pieces to form them into a continuous band. In another embodiment, conveyer n is replaced by feed rollers, the pieces d being supported by parallel guides and having adhesive paper strip applied to one or both surfaces. In a further embodiment, the edges of pieces d are treated with a thermosetting or thermoplastic adhesive, conveyer n is increased in length and an electric or other heater is located below conveyer n so as to bond the edges of the pieces carried in the under surface thereof.
