772,772. Relief valves. WIGGINS, J. H. April 20, 1955, No. 11426/55. Class 135.. A combined pressure and vacuum relief valve for use on a tank comprises a vent 10 mounted on the tank 11 and connected by a flexible pipe B to a bellows A having a fixed upper plate 1 and a movable lower plate 2. The plate 2 is connected to a lever E which carries a valve palate 16 controlling the vent 10, a weight W and pins 18, 19 engageable with fulcra 9, 8 respectively disposed as shown. With zero gas pressure in the tank and hence in the bellows, the palate 16 under its own weight and the effect of the weight W seats on the vent 10 and the lever pivots about the fulcrum 9. Initially on an increase in pressure in the tank the palate 16 seats more firmly on the vent 10, the reaction on the fulcrum 9 gradually decreasing until the lever pivots about the palate. On a further increase in pressure the lever rotates clockwise until the pin 19 is engaged by the fulcrum 8 until eventually the moments due to the pressures acting in the bellows A and on the palate 16 about the fulcrum 8 overcome the moment of the weight W to unseat the palate. On the pressure in the tank being less than zero the bellows contracts to press the lever more firmly on the fulcrum 9 until at a predetermined minimum pressure the palate is again unseated.
