Abstract

772,009. Constructional elements. HAMILTON, A. M. Jan. 11, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 1224/54. Class 20(2) A pressurized element for masts, bridges &c., is constructed from flat sheets of metal &c., 1, 2, Figs. 2 and 3, which are joined at their edges 3, 4 in pressuretight manner and then supplied with pressure fluid which inflates the element to a circular cross-section with the edges forming radially extending flanges. The edges are joined by welding, or by bolts or rivets with. the interposition of rubber &c. strip. The closed end 6 of the element is of conical formation and the sheets are welded along the lines of stiffening wires 5. Instead of wires, lines of welding may be permanently or temporarily stiffened by strips of metal 11, Fig. 6, bolted or riveted to the flanges. The holes or slots 13 and 14 in the flanges for the latter purpose may also allow the interconnection of two or more elements. Fig. 7 shows an element formed of three sheets 15 with interconnected radial flanges 16. A group of elements may be embedded in cement &c., with bars of reinforcement. The pressure fluid may comprise a gas or a liquid, or an expanding solidifying material, or solidifying material such as solid or frothed or foamed cements or plastics or rubber compositions. Instead of metal the sheets may comprise thermoplastic material, glass fibre, or rubber covered wire fabric. Specifications 693,423, 693,467 and 700,444 are referred to.
