Abstract

Large-area sandwich-type constructions are fabricated from sandwich elements joined edgeto-edge, each element having a rigid foam core with covering layers projecting beyond the core and positively connected to the corresponding projecting layers of adjacent elements so as to leave a cavity between the adjacent core edges, this being filled with material, e.g. a liquid polyurethane reaction mixture, which sets into a rigid foam. A preferred foam is homogeneous with a density of 80 kg/m<SP>3</SP>. The cover layers may consist e.g. of steel, light metal, glass fibre-reinforced resin or asbestos cement and may be of the same or different materials on opposite faces. They may have abutting, overlapping or cover-plate connections to adjacent elements secured by welding, riveting, screws, overlapped seams or adhesive (Figs. 2-9 not shown). Temporary or permanent reinforcing profiles may be used to hold joints together during bonding and filling, the holes resulting from withdrawal of holding bolts being plugged with solid foam plugs and metal stoppers. Regulation of hydrostatic pressure of the foam filling may be obtained by covering de-aerating outlets with fibrous fleece. A network of joint cavities may be filled at the same time by appropriate arrangement of air outlets.
