[Also in Groups XI and XXIII] A hand lamp or the like, or a vice comprises first and second clamping members, the second clamping member being adjustable by longitudinal movement, the first clamping member being movably mounted and biased towards the first clamping member by spring means. In the hand lamp shown in Fig. 1 the second clamping member 5 which has a jaw of oil-resisting synthetic rubber, is slidably mounted by means of a bracket 7 on a body part 1 having two limbs 2, 3 arranged in L formation. The clamping member 5 is adjustably positioned on the limb 2 by means of a pawl 9 which is hinged to the bracket 7 and which engages ratchet teeth 6 on the limb 2. The pawl is urged into contact with the teeth by a coil-spring 11 mounted on a pin 12 and the pawl can be released from the teeth by a finger-piece 10. The bracket carries a hook-shaped part 13 by which it may be moved along the limb 2. The second clamping member 14 is slidably mounted on the limb 3 and comprises a plate 15 carrying a jaw identical with that of the first clamping member, the plate 15 being carried by a stirrup 16 which is slidable between guides 17 on the limb 3. The stirrup 16 is pivotally attached to the top end of a lever 18 which is pivoted to the L- shaped body part at 19. The lower part of the lever 18 forms part of a resilient handle the other part of which is formed by a strut or grip 20 fixedly secured to the limb 2. A leaf-spring 21 bent to V shape is positioned between the lever 18 and the strut or grip 20 to urge the clamping member 14 towards the clamping member 5. In a modification coil-springs held between the lever 18 and the limb 3 may be substituted for the leaf-spring 21. Instead of the limb 2 having ratchet teeth as shown, a plurality of apertures engageable by the pawl 9 may be substituted or a cam lever can be used. The limb 2 may also have a shape other than the channel-section shown. A lamp-holder 32 is attached to the body part by means of two arms 24, 25 so that the lamp is adjustable in position. The lamp bulb 31 is surrounded by a cage carried by the lamp holder 32 and in addition socket outlets may be provided in the lamp holder by which a portable tool can be supplied with electric power. The construction shown in Fig. 1 may be adapted for use as a bench vice by providing the strut or grip 20 with a foot or base by which the body part may be screwed to a bench or the like. The lever 18 may be operated by a foot pedal through a cable. The spring may be assisted by hydraulic or pneumatic means. The lamp-holder may be omitted if desired or used to illuminate the work in the vice. In an alternative construction of the vice, Fig. 18, a clamping member 47 is slidable along a body part 48 and is fixed in position by a pivoted cam 49. The other clamping member 52 is attached to a spindle 55 and is movable against the pressure of a spring 51 by a knob 50.
