Abstract

771,790. Machine-tool details. ARCHDALE & CO., Ltd., J. June 30, 1955 [July 8, 1954], No. 19991/54. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXX] A machine-tool comprises a swarf-conveyer 9 beneath the feed-path of work-carrying platens 4 through the machine, a return-conveyer 11 below the level of the feed-path, a hoist (12, 19) adjacent each end of the conveyer for loading and unloading platens, means 15 operable transversely of the feed-path at the delivery end for transferring platens on to the hoist at that end, and means for transferring platens from the hoist at the other end to the feeding-end of machine. Platens 4 carrying work-supporting jigs are loaded by an operator at a platform 5, and then fed in turn between guide-rails to a series of stations. At each station the platens are automatically clamped, and the work operated upon for a predetermined period by tools 6. Each platen is finally fed on to a discharge-platform 7 and the work is unloaded by a second operator. The empty platen is then pushed by a piston 16 controlled by this operator against fixed stops on the machine-bed. In this position the platen operates switches to cause lowering of the hydraulically-operated hoist 12 which passes down between a pair of endless conveyer-belts or chains 11, leaving the platen deposited thereon. At the end of the stroke, the hoist operates switches to start the conveyerbelts and to carry the platen to the opposite end of the machine, where it operates a switch to stop the conveyer, and to operate the further hoist 19. The hoist raises the platen to the level of the platform 5 and operates a piston to push the platen into a position where it is reloaded by the first operator, who then closes a switch to restart the cycle. For safety, switches may be provided which have to be actuated by the operators at each end of the machine before a platen can be transferred or a machine-cycle started. In a modification, a platen is returned automatically after passing through the machine so that one operator only is needed.
