Abstract

771,531. Radiation gas analyses. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. March 20, 1952, No. 7271/52. Class 40 (3). The amount of sulphur dioxide present in a mixture of gases is estimated by determining the ultra-violet absorption of the mixture. As shown, a sample of the mixture passing through a tube 3 is diverted through a tube 1, the ends of which are closed by quartz plates 2, 2a. At one end of the tube is a mercury vapour lamp 4 and at the other a photo-cell 5 responding to ultra-violet emerging from the tube. A filter 6 which may consist of a deposit of silver or quartz passing wavelengths in the range 3050 to 3200 A or of a film of potassium or quartz passing wavelengths in the range 2650 to 2850 Š is situated between the ends of the tube and the photo-cell. A liquid filter comprising a suspension of quartz in cyclohexane and decahydronaphthalene may be used. Source intensity is monitored by a similar cell 7 receiving light from the same source through a tube 9, filter 8 and adjustable diaphragm 11. The outputs of the two cells are applied in opposition at the grids of a valve amplifier 10 which is coupled to a power stage consisting of two cathode follower valves 12 across the cathodes of which is connected a voltmeter 13. The circuit may be initially balanced by a potentiometer 14 or the adjustable diaphragm 11.
