Abstract

771,089. Flexible mandrels. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. June 21, 1955 [June 23, 1954], No. 17943/55. Class 83 (4). A mandrel for use in bending hollow rectangular wave-guides comprises a rigid stem 11 pivotally connected to an articulated body consisting of an elongated tube-engaging end member 44 and a series of links 23<SP>11</SP>, 23, 23<SP>1</SP> disposed between the end member 44 and the stem 11 and each provided with an elongated tubeengaging body portion 24 having a lug 31 with a substantially cylindrical curved surface 34 projecting on one side thereof and a similarly curved recess 39 in its opposite side, the projecting lug on each link being pivotally mounted in the recess in the preceding link. The end of the stem 11 may be formed with a lug-receiving recess 14 and the end member 44 with a lug 45 or the stem 11 with a lug and the end member 44 with a recess. The recesses and lugs are so formed with flats and shoulders that the articulated body can bend in one direction only and in that direction only to a limited extent. Each link has its lug 31, and recess 39, smaller than those of the adjoining link nearer the stem 11, Fig. 3. Specification 771,087 is referred to.
