In a pile supporting device for stacking paper sheets during the time in which the remaining sheets of a stack already in use are still being -handled by a sheet feed mechanism the pile table is lifted by vertical rack bars which are raised and lowered by reduction gearing, the rack bars having table carriers mounted thereon incorporating retractable supports on which the table rests whilst being raised. A stack of sheets 2 is supported on a table 3 in turn supported on carriers 7 which are attached to toothed racks 8 which are raised and lowered by gear wheels 9 on a spindle 10 in known manner. When the stack 2 is nearly used up a second stack 2a supported on a table 3a on carrier rails 11 is placed beneath the stack 2. In the carriers 7 are resiliently and movably mounted two bolts 12 pressed by springs 13 in the direction of the table retaining collars 14 being provided. On their ends nearest the table, the bolts carry projections 15 which are clamped on their lower faces but which have flat upper surfaces to support the table. Locking devices are provided in the carriers 7 consisting of a pin 16 displaceably mounted in the carrier 7, and provided with a peg 16a which in the locked position engages a bore 17 in the table. The pin 16 is displaced by manually rotating a shaft carrying an eccentric peg 19 adapted to engage in a slot 18 of the pin 16. In operation as soon as the last sheet of the stack 2 is used up the table 3 is removed from the projection 15 and the carrier 7 lowered the clamped surface of the projection 15 allowing them to be pushed into the carrrier so that the latter clear the table 3a.
