770,139. Slicing wood. SCHNEIDER MACHINE CO. June 16, 1955, No. 17374/55. Class 145 Blocks 6 of timber are split into lathes by passing. them between a series of opposed rotary knives 32, 33 of which the top or bottom or both series are of progressively increasing diameter so that the depth of cut increases until the laths are completely severed. The knives are clamped between spacers and sleeves 30, 31 carried by shafts 28 and the sleeves are rotatably carried in bearings 25: the knives are either freely rotatable or, as in Fig. 9, are rotated by a motor through a single chain passing over sprockets 85, the sprockets being of approximately the same diameter as the corresponding knives so as to give them a constant linear cutting speed. The block is held against fence 40 either by score lines made by scoring knives 36 of the same diameter as the first knives 32, 33 or by a ram pressing a rollerequipped cross-head sideways against the block; alternatively, as in Fig. 9, the block may be guided between chain belts 61, 62 urged against the block by spring-pressed members 65. The block may be fed past the knives by a fluid-pressure-operated ram 8 or by driving the chain belts 61, 62 from the same motor as the knive shafts, or by both such means.
