Abstract
770,009. Lift cars running on sides of ships; rope grips; end stop-gears. ANGLO-SAXON PETROLEUM CO., Ltd. June 29, 1954 [July 27, 1953], No. 20844/53. Addition to 708,338. Classes 78 (2), 78 (3) and 78 (5). In a ship which has a lift car suspended by a cable passing over a pulley or the like on the ship with wheels on one side, which during the operation of the car contact the ship's side, the point at which the cable acts on the car moves outwardly from the ship's side as the car descends by the operation of retractable cable actuated means to urge the car in an inboard direction and maintain the wheels in contact with the ship's side. The ship's lift car 1, Fig. 1, has a body 7 which may move in relation to a chassis 8 provided with wheels 9 contacting the ship's side. The car is operated by a pair of cables 2 anchored at 3 to the car and passing round pulleys 5 on the body 7 and over pulleys 4 on the ship to a winch. The chassis 8 comprises a pair of telescopic members 10 connected by a cross beam 12 to which another cable 6 is secured, the cable passing over another pulley 4 to a winch. The chassis 8 is connected at 23 to the first links 22 of toothed linkages 18, one on either side of the car, the linkages being accommodated in U- shaped channel members 24, 25. Each link 22 meshes with a pinion on the stub shaft of each pulley 5. As the car descends the pulleys 5 rotate and with them the pinions in engagement with the linkages to cause the car body to move outwardly from the ship's side. In a modification, the cable 6 instead of being attached directly to the chassis 8, first passes round a pulley which drives the mechanism for moving the body 7 from the chassis as the car descends, the cables 2 being attached directly to the body 7. The car has a pair of doors which open by spring action when a ramp is lowered. An automatically or manually actuated cable grip is provided to cut off the car motor. As shown in Figs. 5, 6, the car 1 is provided with a lanyard 51 which is anchored at 54 on the ship and passes under a pulley 55, connected to a weight 61 slidable in guides 62, and over a pulley 56 on a pivoted arm 59, connected to a switch and brake on the car winch, to a cable-gripping device contained in a casing 52 on the car, and over a pulley 57 to a spring-controlled drum 58. The cable grip comprises a pivoted jaw 63 connected by a cable 69 to a member 53 which normally maintains the jaw out of contact with the lanyard against the action of spring 65. As the car descends, the member 53 contacts the surface of the quay side or the water and the pull by the cable 69 on the jaw ceases whereby the jaw moves to grip the cable under spring action, thus tensioning the lanyard 51 and operating the switch-arm 59 against the action of a spring 60 to stop the car. A handle 68 is provided so that an occupant of the car can operate the grip and stop the car. Specification 770,010 is referred to.
