Abstract

769,935. Ceramic-meta! seals. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 28, 1956 [March 2, 1955], No. 6231/55. Class 36. A ceramic-metal seal comprises two ceramic members 4 having corresponding cylindrical ends, an annular metal member 3, locating means 3a projecting on both sides of the plane of the member 3 exteriorly of the members 4 so as to locate the member 3 with respect to the members 4, and intermediate sealing material bonding the members 3, 4. The locating means 3a may be integral with the member 3 and formed by distorting its outer edge, or may comprise a separate rim secured to the member 3. Tube structures involving multiple disc seals may be made by stacking the elements and then heating to form all the seals simultaneously. The members may be stacked within a closefitting hollow jig, or if the members 3 have aligned apertures they may be assembled on a central jig. When the seal forms the termination of a structure the member 3 is sealed on one side to the final ceramic element of the structure and on the other side to a further ceramic element. The bonding material may be glass or metal.
