A pen or pencil has a writing unit, e.g. a ballpoint pen 6, which falls freely between abutments in the barrel 1 and a latch which holds the pen 6 in writing position under the influence of a weight 12 arranged to fall axially in the barrel, relative to the pen 6, between abutments, the latch having parts radially displaceable by the side wall of the dropping weight to engage a shoulder 19 in the barrel for supporting these parts in radially displaced position. When the pen is held in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pen 6 drops into engagement with an abutment 39 due to the weight 12 dropping on to an abutment formed by a carrier 8 for the pen, such that the point 20 projects beyond a nose piece 4 screwed into the barrel 1. The front conical portions 13 of the weight 12 forces balls 17, forming the radially displaceable latch parts, into engagement with the shoulder 19, thereby locking the pen 6 in writing position. When the pen is held in point upwards position the weight 12 drops on to a flange 10 forming an abutment and then the balls 17 disengage the shoulder 19 allowing the pen 6 to drop until a flange 11 on an extension tube 9 engages,an internal flange 21 of a sleeve 2. The pen 6 is held in retracted position by a catch 23 fitted in a groove 22 of the sleeve 2 and engaged by a spring 24 which presses a nose 25 on the catch 23 into engagement with flange 11. The nose 25 is released by a stem 26 extending through the barrel. The pen 6 may be given a slight rotation whilst being brought into writing position by fine notches on the abutment 39 and the lower edge 40 of the carrier 8.
