In a piston of the type having a series of metal inserts 40 positioned around the periphery and forming relatively hard bearing-surfaces in the ring grooves, each of the inserts has edges 67, 68 cut at angles spreading to greater width within the metal of the piston and are slightly tapered to less width at their outer ends from an intermediate point 70.
