769,191. Washing-machines. GILLOTT ELECTRO APPLIANCES, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1954 [Oct. 4, 1953], No. 27034/53. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for cleaning fabrics comprises an electromagnet 5 mounted within a thin metallic housing 1, 2 serving as a diaphragm for the transmission of vibrations, the armature 4 of the electromagnet being mounted in the wall of the housing, a resilient mounting between the housing and means for supporting the electromagnet, and means for feeding A.C. to the electromagnet to cause the housing 1, 2 to vibrate and thus to radiate vibrations through a liquid in which the apparatus is immersed. The interior of the housing 1, 2 may be connected with the atmosphere by means of a tubular or annular passage incorporated in a cable 29 (see Group XXXVI) supplying the electromagnet 5. The housing comprises two parts 1 and 2 detachably connected together at 3 in a water-tight manner. The parts 1, 2 are elliptical in section and provided with ridges 27. The armature 4 of the electromagnet is secured on the base 6 of the housing part 1 with an interposed insulating plate 7. The electromagnet is supported by a part 22 screw-threaded on to a handle member 18. A diaphragm 11, two rubber rings 10, 12, and a packing disc 26 are secured between the handle 18 and part 22. The rings and diaphragm are also secured to a rim 9 on the part 2 by means of rigid rings 14, 17 and screws 13. Where the cable 29 leaves the handle it is secured by a rubber pad 36 and screwed cover 38 provided with a carrying handle 39.
