A needle selector for patterning in handknitting apparatus comprises members 10 housed in a body formed of opposed plates 1, 2, and slidable on guides 6, 7, 8, to project from either longitudinal edge of the body. Each member 10 is formed from wire bent as shown, with an inwardly bent locating part 12 and with a gap 11 between its ends so that the resilient engagement of the part 12 between the related guides 7 and 6 or 7 and 8 is not hindered. Projecting members 10 are engaged behind the butts of needles to move the needles into operation. Since any member 10 projects from only one side of the body at a time, a setting of members corresponding to a particular pattern along one longitudinal edge of the body will also provide, along the other longitudinal edge, a setting corresponding to a complementary pattern.
