Abstract

767,860. Blasting devices. MAUMEE COLLIERIES CO. Oct. 19, 1954 [Nov. 5, 1953], No. 30094/54. Classes 9 (1) and 68 (1). In blasting rock, a dry bore hole 1a is loaded with ammonium nitrate charges 6 contained in flexible waterproof bags 7 with diameter nearly that of the borehole, the bags being deformed to prevent the formation of air pockets. A primer charge 4 is also introduced so that no point in the nitrate charge is more than 15 to 35 ft. from the primer charge and after stemming the charges the primer is detonated by Primacord 5. The charges 6 are granular free-flowing ammonium nitrate containing less than 1¢ per cent. moisture and mixed with 1 to 12 per cent. by weight of material generating gases on combustion. The combustible material may be carbon black and the waterproof material used for the bags may be polyethylene. The charges are placed in horizontal or sloping boreholes by means of a device having a scoop 10 slidably mounted on a jointed pole 9 having atamping head 11. A stop 13 limits the motion of the head 12 of the scoop, the head being provided with two cut-away sections 15, 16 to co-operate with nylon pins 14 extending from the pole. Longitudinal grooves in the bore of the head 12 are adapted to receive the pins 14. One or more bags of explosive are placed on the scoop, when the pins 14 are flush with the sections 15, 16 of the head 12. The device is then pushed into the borehole until the scoop reaches the bottom of the hole, and the pole is twisted clockwise through 180 degrees, so that the bags drop off the scoop. Then by twisting the pole counter-clockwise through 180 degrees, the pins 14 are brought into register with the grooves in the head 12. By a pull on a wire 23, the scoop is brought against the stop 13 and the pole pressed to bring the tamping head 11 against the explosive and compact the charges in the borehole. All metal parts of the device are of copper or bronze and other parts are of wood, plastic or rubber. The ammonium nitrate, which may have a grain size between 8 and 30 mesh, may be coated with 0.5 per' cent. by weight of rosin. Diatomaceous earth or aluminium stearate may also be used to coat the charges, to render them water-resistant and non-caking.
