Abstract
1374940 Loading boreholes with explosives CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 April 1973 [3 May 1972] 20421/73 Heading E1F Boreholes are loaded with an ANFO (ammonium nitrate/fuel oil)-type blasting agent by adding the components of the agent to a stream of air which is moving within a conduit 1 at a pressure less than 20 p.s.i. (preferably 6-20 p.s.i.) and a velocity of about 3000- 6000 feet per minute and directing the airentrained agent into a borehole through a flexible hose 9 having a convergent outlet 12. The agent may be discharged premixed from a hopper 2 via a rotary feeder 4 but in the embodiment shown the hopper 2 contains ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and additives are added separately in measured quantities from tanks 5 and 7. A constant diameter acceleration section 13 is attached to the outlet 12 and is centered by devices 14, 15. The borehole preferably has a diameter of at least five inches and, as it is filled, the hose is withdrawn either at a precalculated rate or as indicated by a charge level sensing device.
