Abstract

767,583. Continuous-casting machines. BRENNAN, J. B. May 14, 1952, No. 12214/52. Class 83 (1). [Also in Groups V and XIII] A method of lamination-casting of metal, ceramic-material, quartz, mica, germanium, silica, glass, &c. comprises locating a layer of material 6 with respect to a former 2, which extends into a cooling-zone, feeding the layer through a reservoir of molten-material 11 of lower melting-point, shaping the moltenmaterial on the layer, and cooling and solidifying the material on the layer. The core 2 is of metal or ceramic material of any cross-section and is supported for axial movement or held fast by a bracket 1. A metal sheet 6 is unwound from a drum 7 and formed by rolls 10 on to the mandrel. Alternatively, the sheet 6 is cast on the core by passing the core through a pool of molten metal. The core may be of zirconium-oxide, graphite, plaster, metal, sand or carbon and may be in the form of an annular ring or of stacked divisible moulds, and may be permanent or destructible. The core may be cooled internally. The pool 11 is heated by high-frequency coils 12 and the die 14 cooled by cooling-coils 15. A tool 16 cuts the laminated tubing into lengths. Splines on the mouldportion 14b may be provided to produce strips of laminated material. Alternatively, the cast metal may be applied to the inside of a tube, or to the inside and outside, or to both sides of a strip. Again the core may have a series of recesses so that separate lengths of bushings are produced. A perforated guide-tube may be provided centrally in. the pool 11. In a modification, two steel strips 18, 19, Fig. 3, are gripped between annular or straight mouldparts 20, 21. As the parts pass through the pool 11, metal enters through passages 27, 28 to produce a bronze layer 22, 23 on each steel strip. In a further modification, only one strip is gripped between similar mould-parts to cast a lamination on each side of the strip. The mould-parts are carried through the pool by chains or hydraulic pushers. The operations may be performed under variable pressures in an inert gas or under vacuum, as in Specification 748,643. The metal may be de-oxidized by carbon-monoxide bubbled through it, as in Specification 748,643. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 734,837 and 735,869.
