Abstract
767,074. Coated fabrics. CREED & CO., Ltd. March 11, 1955 [March 18, 1954], No. 7231/55. Class 140. [Also in Group XVI] An electrically inscribable lithographic offset printing plate comprises a base sheet 10 having thereon an adherent conductive ink-receptive layer 11 formed by evaporation of water from a uniform dispersion of finely-divided conductive carbon in a latex of at least one binder of the class consisting of resins and elastomers and which upon drying becomes substantially water-insoluble and ink-receptive, the binder being present in an amount which is at least equal to the amount of carbon by weight and having the property of binding the carbon particles to the sheet 10 without substantially interfering with the conductivity of the layer 11. The layer 11 is provided with a thin adherent coating 12 of such character as to be disintegrated in elemental areas thereof when subjected to electrical marking currents to expose the underlying ink-receptive carbon layer, the coating 12 comprising a pigment dispersed in a hydrophilic water-insoluble binder for receiving an ink-repellent solution. The base sheet 10 may be of non-conductive paper, fabric or plastic and the ratio by weight of binder to carbon is from 1: 1 to 2: 1. The binder may consist of acrylic resin, styrenated butadiene, polystyrene, neoprene, acrylonitrile-butadiene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride and natural rubber. The surface coating 12 is formed by evaporation of the water from an aqueous solution of a water-soluble binder, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, casein, gum arabic and albumen, which is insolubilized. Mixtures of cuprous thiocyanate, zinc sulphide and/or zinc oxide are preferably employed as pigments, in the ratio of three parts of pigment to. one part binder. The thicknesses of the base 10 and layers 11 and 12 are of the order of 2.5-3 mils., 0.8-1.2 mils 0.7-1.25 mils. respectively.
