[Also in Groups XVI and XL (b)] In a printing blank of the planographic type having a backing, e.g. paper, cardboard, cloth, to which an electrically conductive coating layer is strippably attached, the surface of the backing is treated prior to the application of the layer, to render it hydrophilic, i.e. capable of attracting, absorbing or adsorbing water, and the conductive layer has incorporated therein powdered carbon to render the layer perforatable in minute areas by stylus-applied electric voltages and thereby to transfer to the hydrophilic surface a corresponding ink-receptive deposit at each minute area. The conductive coating 10 is preferably formed as a film-forming plastic, such as a vinyl ester polymer, vinyl chloride polymer, styrene polymers, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, as referred to in Specification 760,675, impregnated with carbon black. The backing layer 11 has its surface treated with a pigmented or non-pigmented coating such as casein and formaldehyde or carboxy methyl cellulose and an aluminium salt mixed with starch, casein, polyvinyl alcohol, urea formaldehyde or other binder. The conductive coating on the backing 11 may be formed as a single layer 10 or as superposed layers 10a, 10b of different resistances, and the blank is provided with a whiteish masking coating 12. The stripped conductive coating with its masking coating can be used as a stencil, whilst the layer 11 with its hydrophilic surface and deposits of carbon can be used as a planographic blank. A water-repellent ingredient such as a chlorinated paraffin wax or an octadecanoic amide is preferably incorporated in the conductive plastic layer. The upper coating may be provided with a transverse strip 13 to facilitate the stripping operation and longitudinal reinforcing strips may be added when the stencil is to be mounted on a mimeograph drum.
