Abstract

766,811. Propelling vehicles. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Jan. 13, 1955 [Jan. 25, 1954], No. 2189/54. Classes 79(1) and 79(2). In a heading or like machine with endless track driving means the endless tracks are driven by one or more fluid actuated rams which during their working stroke abut the endless tracks. A ram 14 is mounted on a shelf 13 of the machine and a spring loaded pawl 14a at the end of the piston 19 of the ram engages abutments 15 depending from the endless track 10 and applies an anti-clockwise turning moment to the wheels 11 and 12. The reverse motion can be obtained by rotating the ram 180 degrees about the pivot 16. The pawl 14a is shown in Fig. 2 pivoted to a lug 18 on the end of piston 19, the spring 20 to hold the pawl in contact with the piston end being contained in a bore 21 in the piston 19 and attached between the lug 23 on the pawl and the lug 24 raised from a plug 24a screwed axially into the bore 21. The ram 14 may be double acting, or have return springs, and may derive power from a motor driving an air compressor or hydraulic pump, the motor being attached to or separate from the machine. The endless track may be driven by two rams one of which drives the track while the other retracts, or both of which drive the track simultaneously. The rams may be inclined to the track in a vertical plane.
