Abstract
581,285. Bearings. LEWIN, F., and BRYAN, C. Y. Aug. 22, 1944, No. 15986. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A rectilinear bearing and gib arrangement between two relatively slidable members of which one has a part received for sliding movement in a guideway in the other comprises two series of interdigitated wedge elements extending continuously along the direction of relative movement and engaging with each other, means for exerting lengthwise pressure between the two series being provided whereby side play is taken up. Fig. 1 is a plan view of a machine tool slide 10 and its bed 12 in which play in the runway is taken up by two series of interdigitated wedge elements 13a, 13b on which lengthwise pressure is applied by screws 14; the faces of the wedge elements 13a over which the sliding motion occurs are made considerably longer than those of the other elements 13b. The arrangement thus serves as an adjusting gib. Fig. 5 shows a spring 15 applying the pressure through a dog 16 but with the pressure released, as on the return movement of the slide 10, by hydraulic fluid admitted to space 18 to act on a piston face 17 of the dog. The flank angles of the wedge may differ so as 'to give a reduced wedging effect on the return motion of the slide. With V-grooves in the bed the wedges are of triangular cross section, Fig. 3 (not shown) .
