Abstract

1284536 Adjustable friction dampers DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 19 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968] 44464/68 Heading F2S A piston-cylinder friction damper has friction elements 2 which are forced against the wall 4 of the damper by a pair of adjustable wedges 7, 8 mounted in screw-threaded engagement with a shaft 6. Rotation of the shaft in one direction draws the wedges together thus increasing the resistance of the friction elements to sliding movement. The wedges are required to have rubber elements 15, 16 bonded to these surfaces which engage the correspondingly tapered backing plates 3 of the friction elements 2. A split collar 13 on the shaft 6 engages a groove 14 in the backing plates 3 to relieve the rubber elements 15, 16 from loads acting on the shaft. There are four friction elements 2 each with its own backing plate 3. The cylinder may be of square cross-section.
