Abstract

766,807. Rectifying. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1954 [Dec. 9, 1953], No. 34291/53. Class 38 (2). In a voltage multiplier which comprises. two stacks of capacitors C1, C3 and C2, C4 the junction points of which are connected as shown in Fig. 1 by a series-connected chain of rectifiers R1 ... R5, the multiplier being energized from a transformer S connected across the lowest rectifier R1 and one of the lowest capacitors C1, the polarity of the output direct voltage at terminal T5 may be charged by swinging each rectifier about a pivot C at one end, so that contacts C1 at its other end is moved from one junction between adjacent capacitors to the next junction. That one of the two end rectifiers R1, R5 which is unused is arranged to connect its contact C1 to a terminal at the same potential as the pivot C. The rectifiers may be fixed, but each has a pivoted conductor at one end which contacts one or other of two plates which form the capacitor plates, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification, each rectifier is fixed and has a hinged conductor at each end, whereby an extra capacitor instead of an extra rectifier is needed, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). Each capacitor may comprise two condensers in series. The A.C. may be fed in at the middle of the stack. The rectifiers may be thermionic or metal.
