Abstract
765,993. Fault indicating. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 25, 1955, No. 8706/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (c)] A weak point in the insulation between the conductors of an electrical transmission line, e.g. a coaxial cable, is detected by applying between the conductors a D.C. voltage which is increased until breakdown occurs at the point as indicated by a neon lamp in the line circuit. The voltage is then reduced until discharge at the fault ceases and recurrent voltage pulses are then applied, the amplitude of the pulses being increased until breakdown again occurs. The fault is then located by displaying the echo pulses from the fault on a cathode-ray oscilloscope synchronized with the applied pulses.
