765,727. Paper containing phosphates. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. March 18, 1955 [March 18, 1954], No. 7940/55. Class 96. A water-soluble, molecularly dehydrated phosphate, e.g. 1 to 10 per cent of sodium tripolyphosphate or hexametaphosphate having a, ratio of sodium oxide to phosphorous pentoxide less than 1.7, is added to paper pulp at any stage prior to web formation, to reduce viscosity (allowing working at higher concentrations), to increase freeness, to inhibit bacterial action, and to improve the strength &c. of the resulting paper. Other phosphates mentioned are tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, and pentammonium tripolyphosphate. Glue, rosin, starch, and clay may also be present.
