Abstract

Water-insoluble salts are formed from (1) a phosphoric acid having a smaller content of the elements of water than has orthophosphoric acid and (2) a condensate of an aldehyde and an acyclic compound containing at least once in its structure the unit <FORM:0786736/IV (a)/1> Suitable acids are metaphosphoric, pyrophosphoric and polyphosphoric. The preferred aldehyde is formaldehyde and suitable nitrogen compounds are guanidine, dicyandiamide and dicyandiamidine. The condensation is preferably effected in acid medium. Cyanamide which yields a nitrogen compound with the desired configuration may be employed. The nitrogen compound may contain urea or thiourea. The condensate may contain alkylol groups. The products are useful for flameproofing fibrous materials, being applied in aqueous or organic dispersion or as powders, or being formed in situ. In the examples, dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensates are used. In Example 1, the metaphosphate is precipitated by addition of the corresponding acid. (2) The pyrophosphate is similarly precipitated. (3) Sodium metaphosphate is used to precipitate the metaphosphate of the condensate. (4) The polyphosphate is precipitated using trisodium polyphosphate. The remaining examples are concerned with the fireproofing of textiles or the formation of fireproof boards (see Group VIII). Example (9) uses dicyandiamide containing a little guanidine and in Example (10) the dicyandiamide is mixed with guanidine carbonate. Specification 648,883 is referred to.
