Abstract

Monomeric bis glycol esters of terephthalic or isophthalic acid or mixtures thereof are prepared by ester interchange by heating an ester of terephthalic or isophthalic acid or a mixture of such esters with a glycol in the presence of a catalytic amount of lanthanum oxide. Esters mentioned as starting materials are the methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or phenyl esters of terephthalic or isophthalic acid. Glycols mentioned are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and butylene glycol. The interchange is effected by heating the ester and glycol in the presence of from 0.005 per cent to 0.1 per cent by weight of lanthanum oxide based on the phthalic esters present, in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen while removing the more volatile mono-hydric alcohol by distillation. The excess glycol is then distilled off to obtain the desired bis glycol ester. An example is given in which a mixture of bis ethylene glycol terephthalate and isophthalate is prepared from the corresponding dimethyl esters and ethylene glycol.
