Abstract

The invention comprises benzilic acid esters of the general formula: <FORM:0765607/IV(b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof, where R represents an alkyl radical containing up to 4 carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by reacting benzilic acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof with a compound of the formula: <FORM:0765607/IV(b)/2> wherein R has the above significance. Suitable acids from which the salts may be derived are inorganic acids such as hydrohalic, phosphoric, sulphuric and amidosulphonic acids, and organic acids such as oxalic, acetic, lactic, succinic, maleic, malic, tartaric, salicylic, citric, 2-hydroxyethane sulphonic, aceturic and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acids. In the examples the N-methyl- and N-ethyl-piperidyl-(4) ester of benzilic acid and the hydrochloride salts thereof are prepared.
