Two concentric members, such as a ring 11 and a hub 6, have different hardnesses, at least on the surface, and the harder member is toothed and the other plain so that when one is pressed on to the other, the harder toothed member cuts grooves that ensure a rigid coupling, the swarf being received in a groove 13 provided in the softer member. As described, the spring carrying plate 11 of a friction clutch is made of blued steel sheet or case-hardened steel having a hardness factor between 60 and 65 Rockwell and the hub is made of semi-hard steel having a carbon content of 0.35 per cent, preferably hardened and tempered, the ratio between the surface strength of the plate 11 and the hub 6 being preferably between two and four. The plate 11 has teeth 27 having a pitch circle diameter equal, or preferably slightly less than the diameter of the portion 14 of the hub and the groove 13 for receiving the material cut from the portion 14 is formed partly in a flange 19 and partly in the portion 14 by a form tool 24. When the plate 11 abuts against the flange 19, a washer is placed on the portion 16 of the hub and the annular lip 17 is bent back outwards against the washer. The hub portion 14 has a sloping lead-in 15 and the teeth 27 on the plate 11 may have a similar lead-in portion.
